Ruth Moody brings her Mark Knopfler-approved voice to UKARIA

Friday 9 October 2026UKARIA Cultural Centre

Canadian singer-songwriter Ruth Moody, founding member of The Wailin' Jennys and JUNO Award winner, performs a solo show at UKARIA Cultural Centre on Friday 9 October 2026 at 7:30pm. Moody is joined by Ben Plotnick (violin, viola, vocals) and Sam Howard (double bass, vocals) for a two-hour performance featuring material from her album Wanderer, with a 25-minute interval.

Ruth Moody has spent years building a reputation as one of the more distinctive voices in North Americana, and that reputation now brings her to UKARIA Cultural Centre for a solo performance on Friday 9 October 2026. The Winnipeg-born singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist is best known as a founding member of The Wailin' Jennys, and she carries two JUNO Awards, Canada's top music honour, as proof of her craft.

Moody's collaborations with Dire Straits frontman Mark Knopfler have widened her audience considerably, opening doors to European touring and drawing praise from an artist not known for handing out compliments lightly. Knopfler has said he can't take her off his jukebox, which is about as high a recommendation as a songwriter can get.

Her latest album, Wanderer, is the drawcard for this show. It's a record built from a decade of lived experience: love, loss, motherhood, and the pull of home that runs through all of it. HuffPost called her voice the prettiest in all of North Americana, and on record at least, it's easy to hear why. There's a clarity to her singing that doesn't rely on vocal fireworks, just precision and warmth.

For this performance Moody is joined by Ben Plotnick on violin, viola and vocals, and Sam Howard on double bass and vocals, filling out the sound without overwhelming the intimacy that UKARIA's room is built for. The venue's acoustics have long made it a favourite for artists working in this register, where every phrase and pause matters.

The show runs around two hours with a 25-minute interval, giving the evening a proper shape rather than a single unbroken set. Pre-concert dining is available for those wanting to make a proper night of it, with an antipasti platter for two starting at $33.

Tickets are $80 for adults, $75 concession, and $40 for those under 40, a pricing structure that makes UKARIA's programming more accessible than some might expect from a venue of its calibre. For anyone who has followed Moody's work through The Wailin' Jennys or her solo records, this is a chance to hear that voice in a room built to do it justice.
