The Heartbreak Choir
By Aidan Fennessy
State Theatre Company South Australia’s 2026 season finale will see up to 400 choristers from every corner of the state sing their hearts out at the Dunstan Playhouse.
In this unparalleled collaboration, The Heartbreak Choir will unite 16 statewide community choirs alongside a stellar cast in what promises to be the year's most joyful theatrical event from November 20 to December 5 at the Dunstan Playhouse.
Audiences will witness something truly special in The Heartbreak Choir with local voices becoming part of the storytelling itself. Each night, one of sixteen community choirs will take to the stage, creating a living testament to the power of connection through song in writer Aidan Fennessy's beloved ode to the power of music and finding your people.
This heartwarming comedy will amplify South Australian voices from Murray Bridge to Mitcham, Pasadena to Willunga, bringing them onto the professional stage and filling the Dunstan Playhouse with joy and hope.
At its heart, The Heartbreak Choir tells the story of five locals in a regional South Australian town’s weathered CFS hall who have drifted away from their old choir. Armed with a new name and a last- minute gig at a local winery, they discover that harmony runs deeper than perfect pitch. It's about grief, community, compassion, and learning to hold onto each other when life strikes the wrong chord.
Director Shannon Rush (The Glass Menagerie, Housework) brings her acclaimed vision to the production that features award-winning South Australian performers Genevieve Mooy, Emily Taheny, Billie-Rose Russell, Mark Saturno, Lucia Rose Franks and Darcy Wain, joined by cabaret star Libby O'Donovan in her State Theatre Company South Australia debut.

"This is community theatre at its most ambitious and joyful," said Shannon Rush. "Aidan Fennessy understood what makes the heart tick, and his play The Heartbreak Choir is a beautiful comedy dedicated to community and the uplifting joy of music and the need for people to come together. I can't wait to get into the rehearsal room, with this bunch of talented performers."
Musical Director Carol Young said, “I’m so thrilled to bring together so many voices from across South Australia to perform on a professional stage with State Theatre Company. In an incredible feat, we are getting together 16 choirs, from across 16 communities who will put their heart and soul into this beautiful production. I can’t wait to share this heartwarming play that will want to make you sing out loud!”
With its dry wit, big-hearted characters and unmistakable Aussie charm, The Heartbreak Choir invites the entire state to sing along. This heartening production will have you roaring with laughter, and tearing up with its deeply moving celebration of connection, second chances, and the small, defiantly hopeful ways we show up for one another.
