The Zep Boys bring four decades of Led Zeppelin worship to The Gov

Four decades is a long time to keep a tribute act alive, let alone thriving. The Zep Boys have managed it, and their upcoming show at The Gov is proof that the formula they landed on back in 1986 still works.

The band formed in Adelaide with a fairly simple, if bold, idea: recreate the live Led Zeppelin experience for Australian audiences who'd never get the chance to see the real thing. There were doubts about whether that concept would land. Their first show sold out anyway, and the band has been going ever since, playing everything from packed pubs to outdoor shows in front of tens of thousands.

Frontman Vince Contarino leads the current line-up, joined by guitarists Jack Stevenson and Tzan Niko, bassist Stuart Day, and percussionist Julian Perotta. What's kept the Zep Boys credible across forty years, rather than sliding into novelty act territory, is a clear philosophy: they're not impersonating Robert Plant, Jimmy Page, John Paul Jones or John Bonham. They're playing the songs, and playing them with the intensity those songs demand.

That distinction matters more than it might seem. Tribute acts that lean into mimicry often end up as karaoke with better lighting. The Zep Boys' approach, focused on the fire in the music rather than recreating the men who made it, is presumably why they've outlasted so many imitators and become something of an institution themselves, inspiring other tribute acts along the way.

Over the years they've performed with orchestras and worked rooms of every size, sweat-soaked pub gigs included. That range shows a band that's had to earn its longevity night after night rather than coast on nostalgia alone.

The Gov is a fitting stage for this kind of show. It's a venue built for volume and atmosphere, and a band that's spent decades chasing the visceral end of live Zeppelin worship should feel right at home there.
