The program opens with Karol Szymanowski's Mythes, Op. 30, which employs innovative techniques to evoke three Greek myths: the Fountain of Arethusa, Narcissus, and Pan and the Dryads. Following this, Sergei Prokofiev's Violin Sonata No. 2 in D minor draws on the soundscapes of his ballet Cinderella, balancing a light-hearted neoclassical opening with darker material that emerges later in the work.
After the interval, the duo performs Johannes Brahms' Violin Sonata No. 3 in D minor—the composer's final sonata for these instruments. Written late in Brahms' career, after he had completed all his symphonies and concertos, the D minor sonata showcases his masterful understanding of both instruments' capabilities. Nearly orchestral in scope, the work demands everything of both performers, combining tense urgency with high drama across four movements.
