Australian audiences are set to experience an unforgettable celebration of harmony, nostalgia and musical genius when Al Jardine returns for a special Australian tour honouring the extraordinary songbook of The Beach Boys and the enduring legacy of Brian Wilson.

Joining Jardine on stage will be members of Wilson’s acclaimed touring band, including longtime musical director Darian Sahanaja, whose recent moving reflections on Wilson’s life and music have added even greater emotional resonance to the upcoming performances.

A founding member of The Wondermints, Sahanaja has long been regarded as one of the foremost interpreters of The Beach Boys’ intricate sound. His deep understanding of their catalogue, from early surf rock anthems to the complex studio innovations of Pet Sounds and beyond, made him a natural collaborator for Brian Wilson when Wilson returned to live performance in the late 1990s.

Best known as the longtime musical director for Brian Wilson and a key figure in bringing the infamous SMiLE to the light, Sahanaja joins Al Jardine on his 2026 Australian tour with the same precision, reverence, and creative energy that has defined his career. Having spent more than 25 years performing alongside Wilson, Sahanaja recently described the late songwriter as both “genius” and “honest,” recalling the beauty, vulnerability and humanity that defined Wilson’s music and personality. Those qualities will be front and centre throughout the Australian tour, which promises a heartfelt salute to one of modern music’s greatest creative forces.

Sahanaja’s musical direction oversees performances that faithfully recreate the layered harmonies and orchestral arrangements that define The Beach Boys’ most celebrated work. His role extends beyond direction – he is a multi-instrumentalist, vocalist, and trusted collaborator, often acting as a bridge between Wilson’s original vision and contemporary live execution.

More than a tribute, Sahanaja’s work represents a continuation of a musical tradition. His meticulous attention to detail, combined with a genuine reverence for the material, allows audiences to experience these songs as they were meant to be heard – rich, dynamic, and alive. He ensures that each performance captures the nuance, depth, and spirit of the original recordings – from the sun-soaked simplicity of early hits to the sophisticated arrangements of later works.

The first record Darian Sahanaja ever purchased was The Beach Boys Greatest Hits compilation, “Endless Summer”. On further reflection of his association with Brian Wilson, Darian said, “As a pre-teen, I was ridiculed and even physically abused by my so-called friends for favouring Beach Boys music over the heavier FM rock acts of the mid-’70s they deemed as “cool”. Yet even that amount of peer pressure wasn’t enough to sway my opinion, a testament of how good that music was to me. I wanted to show him how grateful I was for all the opportunities he gave me. To live out the dreams of every musician. To play Carnegie Hall, the Hollywood Bowl, Sydney Opera House, Royal Albert Hall, Madison Square Garden… to share the stage with the likes of Paul McCartney, Neil Young, Bruce Springsteen, Elton John, Pete Townshend and even the Queen of England after performing for her at Buckingham Palace.”

“How lucky are we to have been alive while he walked this earth?” Darian said of Wilson’s legacy. That spirit of gratitude, celebration and musical connection will define Jardine and Sahanaja’s upcoming Australian performances, with a powerful tribute to Brian Wilson’s timeless songs with emotional honesty, and will preserve and present the band’s legacy with authenticity.
