Purple Disturbance. Remember the name, preferably with the volume turned up. Hailing from NSW, their gig (billed as the ‘I Love Rob Lowe’ Tour) at The Austral in Adelaide on Saturday 10 October was an electric hit of punk attitude and high energy performance, with an intimate crowd getting a close encounter with a band that clearly came to let loose.

There’s something freaking great about that combination though: a small room, a band with plenty to give, and very little distance between the action and the audience. The intimacy was part of the appeal. This was a chance to catch Purple Disturbance up close, where the force of their performance could make its presence properly felt. Big energy doesn’t need a big room. Sometimes, a smaller one gives it all the more impact.

‘Sara Lee’, ‘Rob Lowe’ and ‘Criticise Penalise Attack & Slam’ were the standouts, giving the night three very good reasons to keep this band on the radar. Together, they provided the strongest impression of what Purple Disturbance bring to a live stage: personality, attitude and the appetite to throw themselves into a performance. ‘Criticise Penalise Attack & Slam’ certainly has a title built for a gig like this. Subtle entrance? Hardly.

“Purple Disturbance packed stadium-sized attitude into an intimate Adelaide gig - electrifying energy, standout songs and enough spark to make The Austral feel like the centre of the universe.” - Markus Hamence

Jed, Josh and Jess are talented musicians and smash the setlist out of the park and prove more than capable of keeping up with Thom and his endless insane stage energy. Thom has charisma (in and out of his shirt), and kind of a cross between Jim Morrison, Iggy Pop and Yungblud. The foursome are well matched and give a tight family unit in the performance.

What made the evening land with killer vibes was the commitment. There’s a particular pleasure in watching a band give an intimate audience that much energy. Every person in the room matters, and a performance with this much electricity makes a smaller gig feel like an occasion. For Adelaide live music lovers, these are the encounters worth making room for in the calendar.

Wrapping Up: Purple Disturbance left a big impression on an intimate Adelaide crowd at The Austral, delivering an electrifying performance with ‘Sara Lee’, ‘Rob Lowe’ and ‘Criticise Penalise Attack & Slam’ leading the charge. This is why I love live music up close: the energy gets under your skin and gives you something to carry home. Keep an eye on this lot - and get yourself in the room.
