Robbie's cheeky charm steals the show at BRITPOP World Tour opener

By

Robbie Williams opened his BRITPOP World Tour at Adelaide Oval on Saturday 7 November with support from The Lottery Winners and G Flip, delivering a five-star performance built on his signature blend of charisma, self-aware swagger and emotional directness. The headline act's generosity extended beyond the stage when he encouraged local cabaret performer Georgie Potter to promote her Adelaide Fringe show Fangirl Fundamentals to his stadium audience, turning a moment of stardom into an enduring connection with Adelaide's arts community.

There’s pop-star charisma, and then there’s Robbie Williams: that gloriously cheeky combination of swagger, sentiment and the suspicion he’s about to say something he probably shouldn’t. His BRITPOP World Tour at Adelaide Oval on Saturday 7 November marked the opening of his Australian run, with The Lottery Winners and G Flip completing a particularly tasty triple serving.

The support bill deserved its own spotlight. The Lottery Winners’ infectious British indie-pop and big-hearted songwriting made them a fitting match for the BRITPOP banner, while G Flip offered a distinctly Australian flavour through their combination of drumming, singing and emotionally direct pop. Two very different musical personalities, both giving this line-up an appeal that stretched beyond its headline name. With The Lottery Winners touring material from KOKO, there was also a welcome opportunity for Robbie’s audience to connect with another chapter of contemporary British pop. The Lottery Winners are back in Australia in 2027 with their solo tour, 'don't miss it' is my advice!

“Robbie Williams: cheek in abundance, heart close to the surface and charisma you could power Adelaide with.” - Markus Hamence

Then there’s the Robbie factor. The raised eyebrow. The self-awareness. The self deprecation (Quoted: The fat dancer from Take That). The willingness to be both the superstar and the bloke taking the piss out of the superstar. His appeal has always extended well beyond the records; personality is an enormous part of the package, and he has never been short of that. The confidence gets your attention, but the vulnerability underneath gives you a reason to care. His heart is laid bare on stage, he gives it all on his sleeve.

One reported Adelaide encounter captured that connection beautifully. Local performer Georgie Potter found herself being serenaded by the very artist who inspired her comedy cabaret, Fangirl Fundamentals. Robbie then encouraged her to promote her upcoming Adelaide Fringe show in front of his audience. Imagine creating a show about your musical idol and having him become your unofficial publicity department. Honestly, how do you top that?

“The swagger gets your attention. The vulnerability keeps it. That’s the Robbie Williams magic.” - Markus Hamence

It’s a lovely example of what a little generosity can do on a very big stage. For an artist, an exchange like that occupies a few moments; for the person on the receiving end, it becomes part of their life story. And for Adelaide’s arts community, there’s something particularly delicious about a local cabaret finding its way into an international pop star’s stadium show.

From the opener of 'Rocket', to the hits 'Rock DJ', 'Let Me Entertain You', 'Strong', then the covers 'New York, New York' and 'My Way' through to the class 'Angels', Rob had us firmly in his hands. The introduction of the band let to a snippets of cool tracks too, 'YMCA', 'Man I Feel Like A Woman', 'Down Under' and even INXS' 'Never Tear Us Apart' (and to the woman booing behind me during this, kindly f*ck off, of course he is not Michael Hutchence, he's Robbie Freakin' Williams)

That balance of mischief and affection is central to Robbie’s enduring appeal. He can sell the larger-than-life persona while leaving room for the fan who has followed him for years, carrying their own memories and emotional connections to his music. Behind the bravado is an entertainer whose relationship with his audience remains a substantial part of the attraction.

The BRITPOP name supplies the attitude, but Robbie Williams supplies the personality: cheeky, theatrical and sentimental enough to keep the swagger interesting.

BRITPOP. Bravo!
