Her Majesty's Theatre is a historic theatre in Adelaide featuring a 1,467-seat auditorium across three levels. The theatre hosts ballets, opera, plays and performances by major companies. It reopened in June 2020 following a major redevelopment that expanded the stage and auditorium while preserving its heritage facade.

Getting there

Public transport: The free City Connector bus operates routes 98A, 98C, 99A and 99C, with services every 15 minutes on weekdays and every 30 minutes on weekends. The tram stops in Victoria Square 250 metres away. The nearest taxi rank is 250 metres east outside the Hilton Hotel on Victoria Square. Parking: Available at Care Park (6 Pitt Street), UPark Grote Street (82 Grote Street), and Wilson Parking (23 Franklin Street). Cars can drop off passengers on Grote Street.

History

Originally built in 1913 as the New Tivoli Theatre, it was designed by Adelaide architects David Williams and Charles Thomas Good. The foundation stone was laid on 14 October 1912 and it opened on 5 September 1913 as part of the national Tivoli vaudeville circuit. It was renamed Her Majesty's Theatre on 31 August 1988. The theatre closed in 2018 for a two-year, $66-million major redevelopment and reopened on 12 June 2020.

Good to know

The theatre is cashless. Foyer bars on all three levels open 45 minutes before each performance, offering beer, wine and snacks, with a 12% surcharge on public holidays. Pre-show dining available in the rooftop Ian & Pamela Wall Gallery (bookings essential). Patrons under 16 must be accompanied by an adult. Accessibility features include removable seats for wheelchair users on all levels, lifts accessing all levels, hearing loop and hearing assistance packs (Beyerdynamic Hearing System), accessible toilets, and wheelchair loan available via 131 246 or at booking. Assistance animals welcome throughout.
