Adelaide Festival Centre is South Australia's principal performing arts venue established in 1973. It hosts world-class theatre, music, dance, and musicals across multiple venues including Festival Theatre (seating almost 2000 people), Her Majesty's Theatre, Dunstan Playhouse, and Space Theatre.

Visiting Adelaide Festival Centre

Location

King William Road, Adelaide SA 5000, located on the western side of King William Road approximately 200 metres north of the North Terrace intersection, in the Riverbank precinct adjacent to Elder Park.

Getting there

Adelaide Railway Station is next door. Tram stops in front of the train station on North Terrace and in front of Festival Theatre on King William Road. Free City Connector bus routes 98A, 98C, 99A and 99C operate every 15 minutes on weekdays and every 30 minutes on weekends. Taxi services available at nearby ranks on North Terrace and King William Street.

History

Festival Theatre opened in June 1973. The centre was designed by Hassell Architects and is distinguished by its two white geometric dome roofs. Extensive redevelopment of external spaces began in 2016, with the car park and plaza completed by 2024. Theatres and internal spaces underwent extensive upgrading and refurbishment in late 2025, reopening in time for the Adelaide Festival in February 2026.
