Review by Natalie Renna – Performance date: Saturday 23 November 2024, Amphora, Marvel Stadium, Docklands, Melbourne, VIC.
On Saturday, November 23rd, Bobby Fox graced the newly opened Amphora within Melbourne’s Marvel Stadium with his spellbinding performance of Iconic Songs of George Michael. The venue, an architectural masterpiece, provided the perfect backdrop for an evening that was equal parts intimate and exhilarating. From the moment guests arrived, every detail – from the stunning entrance stairs to the impeccably timed three-course dinner – exuded elegance and thoughtful planning. This performance was the first of it’s kind for the venue as they lead into 2025 with regular live entertainment shows, and word is, some big names are coming. I know I’m already keen for it.
The Venue: Amphora
Only eight months old, Amphora is a revelation in Melbourne’s entertainment scene, offering an immersive experience that goes beyond the award winning ceiling and meticulously hand painted floral walls. The interior design is next level, with hand painted wall murals, detailed ceiling work and only the luxe of furniture that plays wilfully around the stunning grand bar. Impressive. The three-course meal was a highlight, starting with a selection of delicacies including Parisian bread paired with cowboy butter, smoked eel cigars, and Wagyu bresaola, all artfully presented. The main course, a melt-in-your-mouth Wagyu strip loin accompanied by caramelized cauliflower purée and tarragon jus, was a triumph, while the dessert – a customizable ice cream sandwich – added a playful yet indulgent finale. A perfectly chilled tequila cocktail upon arrival set the tone for the evening, and the meticulous attention to detail ensured a seamless blend of fine dining and musical enchantment.

The Performance: Bobby Fox
The charismatic Bobby Fox brought George Michael’s music to life with a blend of soulful vocals, captivating stage presence, and his irrefutable smooth Irish charm that won over the audience from the first note. Backed by the musical brilliance of his 4-piece band and a female backing singer, Fox delivered an emotional journey through Michael’s iconic hits and personal stories.
Fox’s storytelling added depth to the performance, weaving tales of Michael’s youth, relationships, and creative legacy between songs. His renditions of Father Figure and Spinning the Wheel stood out for their emotional resonance, while finale, Freedom, had the entire audience on their feet, creating a euphoric second act. A scan across the room displayed the obvious smiles and joy, the energy of attendees undeniable, with many simply having to get out of their chairs to dance. The intimate nature of the performance, with Fox weaving through the crowd, fostered a connection that felt personal and deeply moving.
The Atmosphere
The energy inside Amphora was electric. Fox’s swoon-worthy dance moves and the crowd’s enthusiastic response transformed the evening into a celebration of music, love, and life that left the crowd begging for an encore.
A Highlight
Without doubt one of the most beautiful parts of the performance was in the second act. Bobby encouraged everyone to bring out their phone and turn on the torches. We did, and it was overwhelmingly dazzling as he commenced a stirring ‘Don’t Let The Sun Go Down On Me’ with an effortless ease.
A Must-See Experience
If you haven’t yet visited Amphora, this stunning venue is reason enough to plan a night out. From its state of the art design elements, impeccable acoustics to the flawless execution of every element of the evening, it’s a space where artistry and hospitality converge. And Bobby Fox’s heartfelt tribute to George Michael? Simply unforgettable.
Huge thanks to Markus Hamence Presents for having me along to this unforgettable evening and I’ll be back for more at Amphora.
