Madame Martha’s After Dark: The Parisian Cabaret

March 6, 2025

Review by Markus Hamence – Performance date: Wednesday 5 March 2025, Gluttony, Adelaide, South Australia

Stepping into the world of Madame Martha’s After Dark: The Parisian Cabaret is monumentally akin to being whisked away to the heart of Paris’s vibrant nightlife (old-school stye). This captivating and colourful (in costumery and character) show, a highlight of the 2025 Adelaide Fringe, promises an evening filled with timeless music, evocative performances, and a touch of French flair complete with bread stick. It is a sexy romp with that imaginatively blends song and poetry as French storytelling.

A Journey Through Music

Starring Iva Rosebud, Meg Hickey and the producer of the show, Jens Radda, this cabaret masterfully intertwines classic French chansons with contemporary hits, offering audiences a fresh perspective on beloved tunes. Such songs from legends like Charles Aznavour and Edith Piaf are reimagined, blending seamlessly with modern tracks from artists such as The Pussycat Dolls. With a classic Billy Joel number, that stopped us in our tracks, perfectly sung by Radda with authentic simplicity and emotion in a stunning blue gown number while perched on a stool. There was a timeless Gloria Gaynor banger, the set-list was just impeccable. A highlight that drew much applause was the classic ‘What Makes A Man A Man’ by Rosebud (who also produces the most outrageously wonderful strip-tease that is most certainly NOT for the timid) – Excellent, heartbreaking and overwhelming. Hickey dives deep laden with nipple pinching accordion and a pitch perfect voice and sublime movements.

The three characters are perfectly drawn and executed well on stage. The connection between them and the engagement with the audience is rewarding.

I spy a respectful nod to Madonna’s Madame X period. And that is a delightful observation.

The costumes, hair and the make-up are of high standard and flawless.

A Homecoming Celebration

Returning to the Adelaide Fringe holds special significance for the creators. They express immense pride in the show’s evolution and cherish the opportunity to bring it back to its roots, sharing, “It fills us with such pride to think how far this incredible show has come. To return to its origins at Adelaide Fringe is truly special.” And what a lucky bunch of Adelaidians, and visitors to Adelaide, that they have returned… they 100% bring the quality and spectacle that is required to entertain and enthral.
