David Campbell: Good Lovin’ & More – Adelaide Cabaret Festival 2025

June 21, 2025

Review by Markus Hamence – Performance date: Friday 20 June 2025, Adelaide Cabaret Festival, Her Majesty’s Theatre, South Australia

David Campbell’s return to the Adelaide Cabaret Festival stage was a slick, tight and a high-standard concert – it was an exceptional masterclass in charisma, nostalgia, and finely tuned musical storytelling. Titled Good Lovin’ & More, this polished and high-spirited show is a seamless blend of Campbell’s signature charm and a rich musical catalogue that celebrates the golden era of pop, swing, and soul. David ‘Showed us how it should be done!’… with flair, upmost professionalism and oodles of honed talent.

Vocals & Musical Direction

The second the band struck up the opening number, it was obvious us the audience were in for a night of sonic joy. Campbell’s vocals remain one of Australia’s most versatile – effortlessly swinging from Motown exuberance to smooth balladry. Songs like ‘Good Lovin‘ and ‘Dream Lover‘ popped with high-energy brass and tight rhythmic backing, while quieter moments like ‘Begin The Beguine’ gave Campbell space to showcase his emotional range and vocal control.

His long-time collaborator (longer than their respective marriages, they’re committed) Joe Accaria, led a dynamic 6-piece band (plus one back-up singer) that perfectly matched Campbell’s energy. With horns blaring and keys rolling, the arrangements felt full and vibrant – authentic to the era yet modern in execution.

As the evening performance rolled along towards the climax the remaining last set of songs got us up out of our seats and the party really got going as David ‘Rocked It Out!’ Hots like ‘Come On Eileen’, ‘Tainted Love’ and ‘Shout’ (The Finale) proved that David is as versatile as the artists he admires.

Stage Presence & Storytelling

What elevated Good Lovin’ & More beyond a jukebox revue is Campbell’s ability to connect. Between songs, he shared personal reflections about his career, influences, and family – touching on his father Jimmy Barnes, his own journey through stage and television, and what it means to return to Adelaide, where he once served as artistic director of the very festival he now headlines. Complete with a cheeky story of one his twins, David’s patter spots are enthralling and round the evening to perfection while showcasing his talents as an all-round entertainer. Credit.

Campbell has an uncanny ability to make a large theatre feel intimate. His warmth and wit are effortless, and the comedic timing in his anecdotes – whether recalling a stepping our of his father’s shadow or name-dropping with flair – was met with genuine laughter. The pacing was flawless; songs never overstayed their welcome, and banter never dragged.

Setlist Highlights

The setlist pulled generously from the ‘60s soul and swing songbook, as well as Campbell’s favourites 80s bangers. Highlights included:

  • Shout – A powerful closer that had the crowd clapping and singing along.
  • Smoke Gets In Your Eyes – Wow, really. It was packed with harnessed talent (As ws Begin The Beguine).
  • Things – Performed as a duet with Vienna, which added a welcome vocal counterpoint and theatrical spark – it was fun AND bouncy.
  • Dream Lover – A nod to Bobby Darin and Campbell’s past musical tributes, delivered with smooth phrasing and a big band feel.
  • You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feelin – One of the more emotionally stirring moments of the night, delivered with heartfelt restraint.

Production & Atmosphere

Her Majesty’s Theatre was the perfect venue—elegant yet intimate enough to feel close to the performers. Lighting design was simple but effective, shifting from sultry reds to cool blues to match the moods of each number. Costuming was classic Campbell – slick, tailored, timeless.

Clocking in at a breezy almost two hours without intermission, the show never lost momentum. It was accessible, warm, and extremely well-rehearsed, with no dead air and only served as evidence again the world class quality performers and crew that exist in Australia.

Final Thoughts

Good Lovin’ & More is an embrace of arts and entertainment at it’s finest. It celebrates music from a simpler time, delivered by an artist whose love for the genre is genuine and contagious. Campbell continues to prove why he’s one of Australia’s most beloved performers – not just because of his voice, but because of his ability to connect deeply and joyfully with his audience.

Many things are sure with David. But one thing that now stands out for me is David gives 200% into what he does on stage… just like his father.

A long-time fan or new to his work, this show is a warm reminder of the power of live performance – and a standout entry in the 2025 Adelaide Cabaret Festival lineup.

Stars: 5/5

Rating: 5 out of 5.

Verdict: A feel-good, foot-tapping triumph filled with charm, soul, and vintage sparkle. Campbell’s connection with the crowd is unmatched – this was Cabaret at its most joyful and refined.
