ON THIS DAY: 1991 – Cher Tells Us ‘Love Hurts’

A Time of Reinvention: Cher’s Love Hurts Era

In the early ’90s, when oversized denim, power ballads, and hairspray ruled the scene, Cher was crafting something bold, personal, and surprisingly vulnerable. Released on June 18, 1991, Love Hurts was another notch in her ever-evolving discography – it was also a declaration of strength through sorrow, a high-gloss, leather-jacketed exploration of heartache, independence, and that unmistakable Cher charisma.

This was Cher’s twentieth studio album (yes, twentieth!), and it capped off her run with Geffen Records. By this point, she’d already conquered nearly every corner of entertainment – Oscar wins, chart-toppers, and Vegas residencies. But Love Hurts was her leaning into the rock-tinged vulnerability she had been building in the late ’80s with Heart of Stone and Cher. It was about raw emotions, dramatic deliveries, and letting the world know that even goddesses bleed.

Tracklist Gems: Covers, Classics, and Rock Anthems

What makes Love Hurts stand out is its fierce lineup – a blend of new material and emotionally charged covers that pack a punch. The album opens with ‘Save Up All Your Tears’ a powerful anthem that sets the tone with its unapologetic emotionality. Originally recorded by Bonnie Tyler and Robin Beck, Cher transforms it into a stormy power ballad that feels like it was always meant to be hers.

She dives into Kiss’s moody ‘A World Without Heroes,’, delivering a haunting, almost gothic reinterpretation. Then there’s the title track, ‘Love Hurts’ – a song she first recorded back in 1975. Here, it’s reborn with a heavier rock edge and the kind of emotional maturity that only life experience can provide.

And if you picked up the European edition, lucky you – it included ‘The Shoop Shoop Song (It’s in His Kiss)’, her buoyant hit from the Mermaids soundtrack. That track alone rocketed her to number one in over ten countries, becoming a European smash.

A Global Affair: Chart Success and International Love

While Love Hurts didn’t dominate the U.S. charts (it peaked at number 48 on the Billboard 200 and earned a Gold certification), overseas, it was a phenomenon. In the UK, it debuted at number one and stayed there for six consecutive weeks – eventually going triple Platinum. It also snagged the top spot in Norway, Ireland, and Austria, proving Cher’s international appeal was as unstoppable as her fashion choices.

In Australia, it hit number 15 and earned Platinum status, giving us Aussie fans more reasons to adore the woman who could break hearts and belt an anthem without missing a beat.

Critics: Divided But Intrigued

As with many of Cher’s artistic reinventions, Love Hurts divided critics. Some praised its bold vulnerability and theatrical delivery. Jim Farber from Entertainment Weekly admired her portrayal of a ‘sexually autonomous’ persona – a woman who’d been through the wringer and came out in sequins and stilettos.

Others, like AllMusic’s Joseph McCombs, were less enthused, labeling the album formulaic and criticizing its heavy reliance on standard pop-rock production. But love her or not, critics couldn’t deny the album’s polish, ambition, or Cher’s commanding vocal presence.

On the Road: The Love Hurts Tour

To bring the album to life, Cher launched the Love Hurts Tour, which spanned Europe and North America from 1991 to 1992. The tour was a spectacle of theatrical costumes, powerhouse vocals, and that electric Cher energy that makes even a heartbreak feel like a victory lap.

She blended hits from across her career with the new material, proving once again that there’s no such thing as ‘too much’ when it comes to Cher. The live shows were sensual, dramatic, and defiant – a reflection of the album itself.

Why Love Hurts Still Matters

Looking back, Love Hurts most certainly is not just a collection of heartbreak songs – it’s a snapshot of a woman owning her pain and transforming it into art. It’s a rock-pop hybrid that captures early ’90s production trends but with a timeless emotional core. It’s Cher doing what Cher does best: evolving, emoting, and empowering.

If you’ve ever cried in your car to ‘Save Up All Your Tears’ or felt the bittersweet sting of ‘Love Hurts’ echo through your speakers, you know – this album doesn’t just sing about heartbreak. It lives it. And then it tells heartbreak to get in line behind the stiletto boots and the Grammy nominations.
