Frankenbok cover Hoodoo Gurus classic as Australian Music Month opener

By

Frankenbok have released a cover of Hoodoo Gurus' "Like Wow - Wipeout!" as the opening track from their latest album, The Arriba War Honkle, which debuted at number 5 on the ARIA Australian Artist Chart. The cover marks Australian Music Month and features the Adelaide legacy metal band's reinterpretation of the 1985 classic, which inspired Frankenbok frontman Azza Bok to pursue music as a child.

“Like Wow! Wipeout” has held a special place in my heart since I was a kid", says Azza Bok. "When I was around 10 or 11, my Nana bought me a Walkman and a cassette of Mars Needs Guitars! That tape barely left the player for the next couple of years as I skated and listened. The song lit something up inside me and inspired me to spend my life playing music.

Stylised ocean waves in blue, white and coral tones sweep across album artwork for Frankenstein.

When I first suggested covering it to the Frankenbok guys, they weren’t quite sure about it. But once we played it in our own style, everyone was pumped, and we decided to make it the opening track on our record.

It felt right to cover such an iconic Australian song that so many people know and love. We genuinely wanted to pay tribute to the Hoodoo Gurus while putting our own spin on it. Opening an album with a cover might be a little unusual, but for us, it felt right.

Some songs stay with you for life, and this one still lights something up in my soul.

Frankenbok’s music embraces heaviness, humour and brutality! The Australian legacy metal band boasts a diverse sound, unafraid to try anything and are ALWAYS impulsively applying that to their craft. Since their inception in 1997, they’ve defied boundaries, constantly evolving, yet never losing their core.

The path they have been carving for close to 30 years without a break proves they are a force of raw power with infusions of playfulness, colour, and a fearless spirit.

With a broad spectrum of influences, Frankenbok seamlessly weaves together alternative, punk, funk, metal, and death metal, creating a sound that is as versatile as it is intense.  Something like nude wrestling in a maximum security prison wing!

HEAVY Magazine recently summed up their sound to: “The wild love child of Faith No More and Red Hot Chili Peppers, with a healthy dose of metal and pure madness.”

Fans will be swept back to the BOK's golden era of what once made them appealing in the first place but carried forward by a limitless musical vision.  The Arriba War Honkle is a defining moment, nostalgic for the old guard, electrifying for the new.

After 30 years of existence, it is clear that this band will never go away! For the nature of Frankenbok is, and always will be, irrepressible….
