Pop culture icon and rock ‘n’ roll pioneer Hank Marvin was a founding member of The Shadows, the band who created the iconic instrumental sound of the late 50s/early 60s with their signature fender guitars and vox amps. The Shadows would achieve 69 UK chart singles, 34 of those with lead singer Cliff Richard. The Shadows are in the top 5 most successful acts on the UK singles charts along with Elvis, The Beatles, Cliff Richard and Madonna.
Hank continues to inspire multiple generations of guitarists, including some of the world’s foremost performers: “Hank is simply unbeatable” – Eric Clapton “I started to learn Hank’s single note style. None of us ever quite got that great sound.” – Brian May (Queen) “Hank made a great impression on me” – Jimmy Page (Led Zeppelin) “Hank is a great stylist and technician, with a wonderful gift for expression on the guitar” – Pete Townsend (The Who)
This year, Hank has contributed guitar to a re-release of Mark Knopfler’s “Going Home: Theme of the Local Hero” in aid of the Teenage Cancer Trust.
The band also features Gary Taylor known for his time in 60’s English group The Herd featuring a young Peter Frampton. In the 70s he recorded with Stealers Wheel and later working on records by Gerry Rafferty, Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick & Tich, Demis Roussos, Jerry Lee Lewis, Frankie goes to Hollywood, and The Proclaimers. Taylor joined Fox fronted by Australian singer Noosha Fox gaining several top 20 hits including ‘S-S-S-Single Bed’ in 1976. Today, Taylor co-owns “Sh-boom” studios in Perth with former Adelaidean Trevor Spencer of Adelaide 1960’s bands The Hurricanes, Johnny Broome and The Handels, The Vectormen and James Taylor Move.
These performances by Hank Marvin Gypsy Jazz is part of the Thebbie Sounds concert series. Loved world-wide, Thebarton Theatre has been Adelaide’s premier live music venue for almost a century. Whilst undergoing renovations the Thebbie team are proud to present ‘THEBBIE SOUNDS’ – a curated series of events featuring all your favourite performers from Thebbie throughout the years at the Woodville Town Hall.
Prominent Sydney architects Kaberry and Chard designed Thebarton Theatre as well as the Woodville Town Hall. Being an almost mini-replica of Thebbie makes Woodville Town Hall so familiar, a home away from home and why it is ideal to stage these concerts for all our Thebbie patrons.
We have assembled a huge programme of artists who will be coming to Adelaide specially to perform for you with proceeds going to keeping the sounds of Thebbie alive and maintain staff whilst undergoing its historic extensive renovations and planned reopening in 2025. These concerts enable the Thebbie team to continue working through this important renovation period and ensure that Thebbie continues to be Australia’s favourite venue for many years to come. Other performers from this concert series include: Glenn Shorrock, Brian Cadd, Normie Rowe, Masters Apprentices, Southern Sons, Vika and Linda Bull, Richard Clapton, Gavin Wood’s Countdown Live and many more!
