Josh Belperio – Songs for Crossing the Seas

Start Date: July 5, 2024
End Date: July 5, 2024
7:00 PM
Goodwood Theatre, South Australia

Help Josh Belperio say ‘Adieu’ to Adelaide and ‘bring on Broadway.’

Local musical theatre writer Josh Belperio is moving to New York City to study the Graduate Musical Theater Writing Program at Tisch School of the Arts, New York University. This prestigious program has produced graduates who have gone on to win Tony awards, work in Hollywood, present shows on Broadway, and one has even won a Pulitzer Prize. Receiving a coveted Fulbright scholarship made it possible for Josh to attend this program, which has been their dream for years. Now, Josh needs your help to make one final push to get them over the line.

This is a fundraiser, but it’s also a concert. Josh will present a compilation of songs drawn from their oeuvre. The vast majority of these songs have never before been performed, as they come from musicals that Josh has been developing under wraps. Josh intends to workshop and develop these musicals in New York – come and see what they are taking over there!

Performing Josh’s songs are luminaries of the Adelaide musical theatre scene:

★ Rosie Hosking (Ensemble, Candide, State Opera of South Australia / State Theatre Company, 2024)

★ Mat Monti (Judge Turpin, Sweeney Todd, Elder Conservatorium Music Theatre Program 2023)

★ Millicent Sarre (Bisexual Intellectuals, Gluttony, Adelaide Fringe 2024)

★ Harrison Thomas (Young Elvis, Elvis: A Musical Revolution, Her Majesty’s Theatre 2024)

★ Lindsay Prodea (Joe Pitt, Angels in America, University of Adelaide Theatre Guild 2024)

The band will feature a mother/daughter duet of Hilary Bruer of the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra on violin, and local composer Rachel Bruerville on the cello.

There will be a silent auction which will be available to all attendees including those participating via livestream.

The silent auction will feature two original artworks by renowned Riverland-based artist Kat Bell.

Duration: 2 hours (includes 20 minute intermission).

“Josh grows as a composer every year, and any of the songs, raps and recitations that make up the show would happily grace an off- (and on a good day, on-) Broadway theatre” – The Advertiser, review of Awkward Activists, 2021.

“Josh is an astonishingly accomplished wordsmith and matches that skill with inventive keyboard work… [Their] bonhomie is contrasted with [their] sincere concern for the world and especially [their] personal movement toward self-assertion.” – The Barefoot Review, review of Right Here, Right Now, 2020
