Leography:
Leo was born Gerard Hugh Sayer on May 21st, 1948, to his parents Thomas Sayer and Teresa Nolan at Shoreham-by-Sea, Sussex, on the south coast of England.
His first success was co-writing Roger Daltrey’s first solo album (Roger is best known as lead singer of The Who) in 1973.
He was discovered by David Courtney in 1972 and along with 60’s Pop Idol Adam Faith as manager, this team produced Leo’s first album ‘Silverbird’ in ‘73. The album featured Leo’s first self-penned hit ‘The Show Must Go On’, which was a UK no.2 record in the same year. It was also covered by Three Dog Night in the US, hitting the top ten in the USA charts.
Leo and David then composed his second album ‘Just A Boy’ in 1974. More hits followed from this: ‘Long Tall Glasses’ and ‘One Man Band’.
1975 saw a further UK chart hit with ‘Moonlighting’. All these hit singles featured Leo’s self-written lyrics, songs which were for the most part autobiographical, Leo telling us his life story so far.

‘Endless Flight’ released in 1976, took a departure from the previous albums, as Los Angeles based producer Richard Perry persuaded Leo to move out of his comfort zone and interpret other composers’ works. Nevertheless, the album featured an original composition, ‘You Make Me Feel Like Dancing’ as it’s first hit single. This song became his first US No.1 and hit the top of the charts in many countries worldwide. It also brought him his first Grammy, for R&B song of the year in 1978.
A second single from the album, ‘When I Need You’, also hit the US No.1 spot and hit No.1 in the UK as well. The ‘Endless Flight’ album sold multi-platinum and will have a 50 year anniversary in 2026.
Two more albums were produced in Los Angeles by Richard Perry – in 1977 and 1978, these producing many more hits for Leo.
His fame was now worldwide, bolstered by a growing reputation for putting on energetic and highly original live shows which garnered rave reviews on every continent.
Leo backed all this up in the early 80’s with his own UK TV series, featuring Leo duetting with many of the music world’s most famous and talented acts.
In 1980, Leo’s cover of Bobby Vee’s 60’s classic ‘More Than I Can Say’ returned him to the top of the international charts, and brought him attention throughout Asia, where the song sits regularly on top of the most requested Karaoke lists.
By 1990, Leo had released 12 albums and 27 singles. At this point he was keen to branch out on his own, using his experience to become his own producer, writing his songs solo whenever he could.
In this vein, he has released 5 self-produced albums since 2005, with the most recent, last year’s ‘1992’, hitting the top of the UK’s Heritage chart with the single ‘Wonderworld’.
Leo has experienced many career highlights along the way.
In 1993, he was the first western artist to play in Vietnam, two concerts in Ho Chi Minh city (nee Saigon).
2006 saw his ‘Thunder In My Heart’ song from 1977 get a remix by Meck, which gave him his second UK No.1.
He’s appeared on many TV spectaculars, working with The Muppets, Julie Andrews, Bing Crosby, Linda Carter, The Carpenters, Tina Turner, Randy Newman, Glenn Campbell, Phil Collins and many others.
Now based in Australia, he shows no signs of slowing down: ‘The voice is still strong, my energy is 100%, my hair is still growing, and I still love my job!’ he explains.
It’s hard to believe this 76-year-old has been in the music business for 54 years yet continues to impress.
The Show Must Go On, indeed…!
