Upside Down Fantasyland

March 2, 2025

Review by Markus Hamence – Performance date: Sunday 02 March 2025, The Warehouse, Unley, South Australia

‘Upside Down Fantasyland’ is a very compelling and emotionally provoking and packed solo performance that has just graced the stage of the 2025 Adelaide Fringe Festival. Presented by the multi-talented Troy Rogers from NSW, this show offers audiences an intimate, deeply moving and challenging glimpse into his personal journey, navigating the complexities of a difficult upbringing – with all forms of abuse at the forefront. Troy’s off-stage warning of the possible ‘triggers’ does not even come close to justify the places that Rogers takes us during the hour’s performance emotionally (to use the word again in the same paragraph is required) elaborate story ahead. Buckle up and have tissues on the ready if you dare the show.

A Poetic Journey Through Personal Turmoil

Rogers masterfully intertwines poetry, songs (Thanks to his trusty sidekick, the Uke), and prose to recount his experiences growing up under the care of his grandmother and then aunty due to parental substance abuse. The narrative delves into themes of out-of-home care and drug-related trauma, shedding light on the resilience required to overcome such adversities. Be warned, this story goes deep and quite often heart-breaking and you tense up repeatedly. I can’t write this without being honest enough to say that not only did I have tears well, but, they also fell. And, sniffling was heard through the intimate audience members. Despite the heavy subject matter, moments of humour and affection are seamlessly woven in, providing a balanced and heartfelt portrayal of his story. This play/piece/offering is about the triumph through the trauma and the tragedy.

A Versatile Artist on the Rise

Over the past three years, Rogers has honed his craft across various artistic disciplines, including poetry slams, acting, singing, ukulele playing, and jewelery making. His dedication culminated in the creation of ‘Upside Down Fantasyland’, which debuted at the Newcastle Fringe Festival and has since toured fringe festivals nationwide. Rogers aspires to transition into a full-time artistic career, with this show serving as a testament to his passion and commitment. I know this will happen.

Audience and Critical Acclaim

The performance has resonated with audiences and critics alike. Comedian Carolyn Swindell praised the show, stating, “Absolutely just fabulous, it was moving and it was sad and it was funny and it was wonderful.” Such testimonials underscore the show’s ability to connect deeply with viewers, evoking a spectrum of emotions.

Final Thoughts

‘Upside Down Fantasyland’ stands as a poignant exploration of personal struggle and triumph. Through his authentic storytelling and artistic versatility, Troy Rogers invites audiences into his world, offering a performance that is both enlightening and inspiring. As he continues to share his narrative, Rogers not only highlights his own journey but also fosters a broader conversation about resilience and the transformative power of art.

Addition 1: You haven’t heard ‘Puff The Magic Dragon’ until you’ve heard Troy’s version. It broke me into pieces.

Addition 2: Troy is a hugger (mentioned after the final bow) and a very kind, good-hearted human – it is quite obvious as the play rolls along. I dare any audience member not to share in this man’s incredible energy by not giving him a heart-felt embrace, a warm hand-shake or an appreciative nod of acknowledgement at the end of the show.

Addition 3: Applauding at the end of this performance almost felt like breaking the energy that was built. Glancing into Rogers eyes was enough. He knew that we knew (I, however, did clap though. Albeit gently).

Credit to a very fine actor, story-teller, singer, poet & musician who’s performs ONLY from the heart. I have a sound feeling there is a LOT more to come from this great and talented human… In many varying realms.
