Review by Markus Hamence – Performance date: Friday 15 November, 2024. The Gov, Adelaide SA.
Adelaide’s own ‘That 90’s Show’ served us a freaking sensational ‘hit laden’ performance titled ‘Unmatched’ at The Gov, paying tribute to the iconic sounds of Matchbox Twenty.
The Opening Act
That 90’s Show totally rock… And this is why: They are cool enough to be their own opening act. The set, primarily sung by Rachel Vidoni (with insane vocal prowess proved in the Cranberries’ haunting ‘Zombie’), consisted of a range of varied mega 90’s hits such as the opening – Alanis Morrisette’s ‘You Learn’, then weaving in the iconic Radiohead song, ‘Creep’ and Robbie Williams’ ‘Angels’ sung by the man behind the keys, Russell James. The hit list kept rolling and included Meredith Brooks’ ‘Bitch’ (which has every woman singing load and proud) amongst other killer numbers before closing with another Alanis number, the biggie… ‘You Oughta Know!’ It was a smash and grab of only the best from that decade of grunge meets boy and girl pop bands. Vidoni’s talent is of the highest quality, she’s got a powerful and controlled voice but keeps it raw and real all while playing the guitar with an ease that oozes a sensual appeal. The large and varied crowd got it. A great way to start the night off.
The Main Act
But, we came for the Matchbox Twenty Songbook. And we got exactly that. The six-piece ensemble showcased their versatility and passion, breathing new life into Matchbox Twenty’s classics. Kicking it off the empowering anthem ‘How Far We’ve Come’, the tone was set and the energy only built from there. If you forgot how many hits the Matchbox legacy had, you were about to remember… From the soulful rendition of ‘3AM’ to the energetic ‘Real World’ each song was delivered with precision and engaging emotion. The accomplished and self labelled 90’s nut, Ben Whittington, held court and gave us the frontman vibes that we expect from That 90’s Show productions/gigs. Ben voice is transient, whether giving us Savage Garden OR Nirvana, Ben deliver with passion. ‘Mad Season’ was bonkers good and ‘If You’re Gone’ gave me the chills like the first time I heard it. The band’s chemistry and musicianship is exemplary, creating an engaging and immersive experience for the audience, the band wanted to be there, the audience wanted to be there… We sung along, we smiled and remembered, we danced (Well the guys just kinda shuffle their feet back and forward, but you know haha) What more makes a better night out?
The Band
The gang on stage know what they do best and do it best is what they gave us. Ben Whittington on Guitar & Vocals is quite simply a ‘real performer’, he’s comfortable on stage and works the crowd super well while also actually being a super humble guy despite his mega lofty talents. Russell James providing Keys and Vocals, Lee Nash on Bass, Michael Jones serving the Lead Guitar, Rachel Vidoni giving Vocals and Guitar and Kyle Sambell on Drums are all flippinunfaultable (Is that a word? Let’s make it one). This band is tight, they know their business and they work the show like a gym work-out, they go hard! Bravo.
Critical Reception
Google any of That 90’s Show’s performances and you will ONLY meet raving and glorious reviews. ‘That 90’s Show’ have consistently received acclaim for their authentic and energetic tributes. Previous performances have been lauded for their dynamic vocals and faithful renditions of 90s hits, I mean have you seen them at the Adelaide Fringe? Or their Unplugged show they did at The Gov earlier in the year. They are fast becoming icons of Adelaide’s music scene.
Conclusion
‘Unmatched’ by ‘That 90’s Show’ at The Gov was a show that of course showed us sickening talent but also reminded us what Matchbox have given us musically. And you know what, I’ve spent the last 24 hours listening to their music on Spotify and vinyl, so it all goes around. it was a heartfelt homage to Matchbox Twenty and the 90s music scene. The band’s dedication to authenticity and their connection with the audience made for an unforgettable evening. For those yearning to relive the 90s or experience it anew, ‘That 90’s Show’ offers a compelling and entertaining journey through the decade’s musical landscape. The closing numbers? Heck yeah, ‘Push’ and ‘Bright Lights’, it set us off on our voyage home with the songs resonating in our heads. Get to their next gig, please, you’ll see what I’m trying to say in words by hearing their music first hand.
Stars? ARE YOU KIDDING ME????? Of course…
