Review by Markus Hamence – Performance date 19 November, The Drive, Adelaide, SA
19 November, 2024, Troye Sivan smashed The Drive in Adelaide with a performance that left the audience awe-struck. The evening was a vibrant celebration of his latest album, Something to Give Each Other, and showcased his evolution as an artist. The girls, the gays, and everyone else in between screamed – and they screamed LOUD. He couldn’t do wrong and he certainly gave something to us… A night of joy! Read on…
Setlist Highlights
The concert opened with the energetic ‘Got Me Started’, immediately setting an electrifying tone as the black drape rose. Sivan seamlessly blended new tracks like What’s the Time Where You Are?’ and ‘One of Your Girls’ with fan favorites such as ‘My My My!’ and ‘Bloom’. A notable moment was the revival of ‘Ease’, performed live for the first time since 2019, much to the delight of long-time fans. If you were there for ‘Rush’ only, well, you had to wait, as it was the sensationally vibrant encore.
Performance and Production
Sivan’s stage presence was both confident and charismatic. His vocals were complemented by dynamic choreography and a visually captivating set design. BUT, his dancing – Exceptional, he’s got the moves and he proved in EVERY song. If his sensual energy could be bottled, I’d buy a crate load. The lighting and visual effects enhanced the emotional depth of each song, creating an immersive experience that resonated with the audience.
Audience Engagement
The connection between Sivan and the Adelaide crowd was insane. He frequently interacted with fans, sharing personal anecdotes and expressing genuine gratitude for their support. This rapport fostered an intimate atmosphere, making the large venue feel personal and engaging. Troye knows his strengths and he works them.
Support Act
Opening the evening was Sydney-based artist Nick Ward, whose soulful and engaging performance set a reflective and heartfelt tone. Ward’s energy is solid, grounded and confident.
A multi-talented artist, Nick Ward sprung onto the scene with his brand of bedroom pop on triple Unearthed, releasing multiple tracks and refining his sound across debut EP ‘Everything I Wish I Told You’. Then was unleashed 2022’s ‘Brand New You‘ about which NME raved: “…a tightrope balance of bravado and self-doubt… few can make it as relatable, redemptive and hopeful”.
Nick’s ability to connect with the audience was real. He mentioned ‘Adelaide’ various times and was appreciated by the masses. A great set.
He’s an artist to watch and there is a wave coming that will showcase his talent to the masses very soon…
Conclusion
Was the autotune toooooo much, f*ck yes, Troye is an amazing singer, why? Was the reverbing acoustics in the venue too much too cope with, f*ck yes. DID everyone have a great time, F*CK yes!
And more… Was there a lot of sexual play-up, yup. Did it upset some more conservative folk, of course. Did they know what they were about to experience, I’m sure they did… Get a clue – It’s art. It’s meant to provoke. You can’t ‘cancel’ everything 😉
Troye Sivan’s concert at The Drive was a nod to his growth as an artist and performer. The evening was a fabulous blend of new material and loved hits, delivered with talent and passion. For those in crowd, it was a night that cemented Sivan’s significant impact on the contemporary pop music scene. CREDIT!
