REVIEW: The Best Of Foo

Review by Markus Hamence – Performance date: Friday 23 February 2024, Adelaide Fringe, Gluttony SA

‘The Best of Foo’ offers a vibrant homage to the artistic journey of a band that defined a music period. Indeed, encapsulating the finest works of the legendary band Foo Fighters in a single, captivating performance (actually two performances). From start to finish, the audience is treated to a kaleidoscope of talent, creativity, and emotion, showcasing the breadth and depth of the Foo’s artistic prowess.

The production seamlessly weaves together a diverse range of anthemic (it’s not a word, but damn it is now) songs, each showcasing the band’s versatility and innovation. Whether it’s through mesmerizing stage work, soul-stirring musical performances, or thought-provoking spoken word pieces, ‘The Best of Foo’ keeps the audience engaged and enthralled throughout.

Adelaide musician, singer & artist Ben Whittington is actually a force to be reckoned with. He leads the show. He has the stage energy to carry it off, in abundance. Ben really knows how to engage with an audience. He sees the crowd, and he plays to the crowd and will twist on a dime if he feels he is required too. A talented professional and a good human – I mean, that’s actually all it takes. Am I right?

Ben hits the stage, with fantastic lighting effects, with Foo Fighters’ banger, ‘The Pretender’. He provides the opener with panache and the respect the band deserve!

The bangers kept coming for the punters… ‘Best Of You’, ‘My Hero’, ‘Long Road To Ruin’, And ultimately climaxing with ‘Everlong’ – ‘The Best of Foo’ is a VERY good night out and money well spent for those who are fans of the ‘Foo’ or even those who love GOOD music from GREAT Adelaide talent.

Ben’s band, consisting of Cam Blokland on Guitar/Vocals, Ben Todd with the Drums and Lee Nash kicking it with the Bass, are tight and are a unit to be be reckoned with. I enjoy seeing performers on stage that actually enjoy being with each other. It’s VERY evident these guys do!

One of the standout aspects of the show, held in the open air stadium, Fantail, is its ability to evoke a myriad of emotions. From moments of sheer joy and exuberance to poignant reflections on life and humanity, ‘The Best of Foo’ takes the audience on an unforgettable emotional journey.

The performers themselves are a testament to Foo’s impact on the artistic community. Their dedication, skill, and passion shine through in every act, leaving a lasting impression on all who witness their talent and the great band they represent and pay homage too.

I asked some audience members their thoughts on the way out of the venue…

“It was a night of iconic rock hits that truly celebrated the band’s thirty-year legacy, making for an unforgettable experience” – Geoff W, Parafield Gardens SA

“I’m the biggest Foo fan and not easily impressed. But I was. 100%.” Tina C, Marden SA

Furthermore, the production values of ‘The Best of Foo’ is top-notch, with seamless transitions, stunning visuals (The lighting is impeccable), and nailed sound design enhancing the overall experience.

While every song in ‘The Best of Foo’ is exceptional in its own right, there are certain moments that stand out as particularly memorable. Whether it’s a breathtaking guitar solo, a haunting melody, or a powerful monologue, these moments linger in the minds of the audience long after the curtain falls (Spoiler: There’s no curtain), lights dim, crowd scramble for their Uber’s or the bats have long departed the cbd in search for their food in the evening darkness (No Maccas or KFC involved).

In conclusion, ‘The Best of Foo’ is a must-see showcase that celebrates the brilliance and impact of Foo’s artistry. It’s a testament to their legacy and a testament to the enduring power of art to inspire, uplift, and unite us all.

Ben & Co. know their stuff, it’s a well deserved FIVE STARS from me! *****
