REVIEW: The 60 Four – Christmas Proms

December 2, 2024

Review by Markus Hamence with guest Patrick Brown – Performance date: Sunday 1 December 2024, Adelaide Town Hall, South Australia

The 60 Four’s Christmas Proms is a joyous and rollicking celebration that seamlessly blends holiday cheer with the timeless charm of the 60s (That The 60 Four are known for), delivering an unforgettable evening of music and entertainment. Held at the stunning Adelaide Town Hall, the performance is a feast for the senses, showcasing the group’s signature vocal harmonies, charismatic stage presence, and a repertoire that perfectly balances Christmas classics and golden oldies – All set under the venue’s wildly breathtaking architecture while also being set against the back-drop of that impressive organ.

Who are they? Easy: Ben Francis – Director and Vocalist, Jack Conroy – Vocalist, Lachlan Williams – Vocalist & Finnegan Green – Vocalist. Separately they have wicked voices and dazzling showmanship, but, together they are DYNAMITE and quite the force to behold.

It was love at first sight (or sound) for me with The 60 Four when I stumbled across my first experience with them about 2 years ago at a show they performed at Norwood Concert Hall. My appreciation of their talent continues to grow with their first Christmas show…

Performance Highlights

The fabulous quartet thrills with their tight harmonies and vibrant energy, capturing the essence of the 1960s while adding a festive twist. From their spirited renditions of ‘Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)’ and ‘Little Drummer Boy’ to toe-tapping hits like ‘Oh What a Night’, The 60 Four ensure there’s never a dull moment. Their voices blend seamlessly, evoking both nostalgia and holiday spirit in equal measure. Oh, and Elvis’ ‘I Can’t Help Falling In Love With You’ was a powerful number in the two hour show, just wow. Bravo!

Not to be out done by their insane vocals though, their dance moves get a very good workout too. The sharp and high energy choreography is unmatched. Especially that the voices did not falter a bit.

Their charm is infectious, and their connection with the audience is undeniable. Between songs, the group shares light-hearted banter and heartfelt stories that add a personal touch to the evening.

A special shout-out to the wonderful musicians too, a line-up that consists of some of the cream of the BEST local talent we have here in South Australia. AND, they keep up with the four boys at the front, THAT wouldn’t be easy! Haha

Production Value

The production is a visual treat, with sparkling costumes, Christmas hats, an array of heavily decorated Christmas trees and dynamic lighting that complement the music beautifully. The stage design strikes the perfect balance between retro elegance and festive whimsy, creating an immersive atmosphere that makes you feel like you’ve stepped into a vintage Christmas postcard. Exceptional staging lads and team.

Audience Engagement

One of the standout aspects of The 60 Four’s performance is their ability to engage and draw in the crowd. They are loveable and I challenge anyone to attend a performance of theirs and not be raving about it in the car trip home and singing the songs the entire next day. Whether through sing-alongs, interactive moments, or simply their magnetic presence, they draw everyone into the celebration that is THE 60 FOUR! And to think they have only just kind of started 🙂

A Collaborative Review

But my friend who attended with me, Patrick Brown, had some stuff to add also (I LOVE collaborating)…

“Attending this performance by The 60 Four was like stepping into a time machine bound for the swinging sixties. This talented four-piece vocal group brought the house down with their incredible harmonies, infectious energy, and a show-stopping setlist spanning iconic hits from The Beach Boys to The Beatles.

Backed by a phenomenal 10-piece band, their sound was as rich and full as the era they celebrated. From toe-tapping classics to heartfelt ballads, they delivered each song with precision, passion, and palpable joy. Their rendition of Elvis Presley’s ‘Can’t Help Falling in Love’ was breathtaking – an emotional highlight that had the audience spellbound.

Adding to the festive spirit, The 60 Four belted out Christmas songs with such enthusiasm that it felt like a holiday celebration. Their fun, interactive vibe made the entire evening unforgettable.

The standing ovation at the end was more than deserved—this is a show that reminds you why music from the sixties remains timeless. Next chance you get to see The 60 Four, don’t even stop and hesitate. They’re a class act that guarantees a night of nostalgia, fun and sheer talent” – Patrick Brown

My Final Thoughts

The 60 Four’s Christmas Proms is more than anther rolled-out Christmas concert; it’s a treat that leaves you grinning from ear to ear and humming your favourite carols long after the final curtain. Perfect for all ages, it’s a fantastic way to get into the holiday spirit while enjoying the timeless magic of 60s music.

If you’re looking for a festive outing that combines nostalgia, top-notch vocal performances, and plenty of Christmas cheer, The 60 Four’s Christmas Proms is a must-see, as always. Oh and word is, there’s a super special Adelaide Fringe show from the boys coming to.

Adelaide – Christmas just got a whole lot cooler.

And how many tree topped glistening stars? Well, like you freakin’ had to ask…
