Review by Markus Hamence – Performance date: Saturday 11 January 2025, The Gov, Adelaide, SA.
It was a balmy night in Adelaide and The Gov in Hindmarsh it heated up even more when transformed into a haven for music lovers as Shaun Holton & friends paid tribute to the inimitable Jeff Buckley with ‘“’Lilac Wine: An Evening with Jeff Buckley’. Now, tackling this artist is no mean feat. He is a beloved icon of music with beautiful poignant songs and soaring vocals. Shaun knew this, and he had his work cut out for him to not disappoint the fans of the late great artist. The night promised an emotional and immersive journey through Buckley’s repertoire, it was exactly that AND it delivered on EVERY note. Let’s chat it through…
How’s the Lineup of Passion and Talent?!
Shaun Holton took center stage, his vocals resonating with a haunting clarity that channeled Buckley’s spirit. Holton wasn’t alone in this endeavor; he was supported by a stellar cast of well qualified musicians, each adding their own flavour to the gig:
- Stuart James Day, known for his work with FAB and Zepp Boys, brought his guitar mastery to the table.
- Shannon Brinsley contributed to the rhythm section, ensuring the performance had a heartbeat as steady as it was soulful.
- Chris Lau, a versatile talent from Roger the Band and Zombie Eaters, added depth and texture.
- Luke Whelan of Mothdust and Zombie Eaters fame provided a dynamic edge.
- Cat Louise, hailing from Solar Soma and Zombie Eaters, infused the music with a poignant and delicate touch.
Before the main act took the stage, Jessica Luxx opened the evening with a mesmerizing set, setting the tone for what would become an unforgettable, exceptional and world-class evening of music. With a new album about to be released and explode to the heavens this is a voice to listen to. Get onto Jesicca’s music asap.
An Emotional Tribute to a Music Legend
The night unfolded like a love letter to Jeff Buckley’s artistry. Shaun Holton & his crew performed many of Buckley’s iconic songs, each delivered with a reverence and emotional intensity that captivated the audience.
IF there were any doubters in the very strong crowd, their thoughts were quickly quashed as Holton brought it, and more.
From the ethereal strains of ‘Lilac Wine‘ to the raw and poignant beauty of ‘Hallelujah‘ (the encore), every song felt like a portal to Buckley’s soul. The band also tackled his more dynamic pieces, such as ‘Grace‘, with electrifying energy that left the audience spellbound.
Holton’s voice, much like Buckley’s, shifted seamlessly between tender vulnerability and powerful crescendos. His ability to convey the complexities of Buckley’s music – its yearning, its melancholy, and its euphoria – was nothing short of remarkable. Holton’s vocal range is remarkable.
But, it doesn’t end there. Shaun’s engagemet with the audience is terrific. Funny, humble, real, he has it in spades. It’s not a difficult thing to be wrapped up in his show.
The Gov’s Innate Charm
The Gov’s reputation as one of Adelaide’s most beloved live music venues shone brightly on this night. I love the Gov (poetry intended), the cozy, friendly, dimly lit space created an intimate connection between the performers and the audience. Every note lingered in the air, the lighting was magical, weaving a shared experience that felt deeply personal.
The crowd, a mix of longtime Buckley enthusiasts and the newcomers, responded with quiet awe and appreciative applause. Many were visibly moved, their faces reflecting the profound emotional impact of the music.
A Night to Remember
The tribute was a celebration of Jeff Buckley’s enduring legacy. Fans praised Shaun Holton & friends for their respectful vibe, noting that the group didn’t simply replicate Buckley’s songs but imbued them with fresh life and heartfelt passion, including a newly built guitar, FOR ONE SONG.
An Homage to a Musical Icon
‘Lilac Wine: An Evening with Jeff Buckley’ was a gig that delivered authenticity by the bucket – it was a soulful tribute to an artist who left an indelible mark on music. Shaun Holton & his talented crew delivered a performance that honoured Buckley’s genius while reminding everyone why his music continues to resonate so deeply.
For anyone who missed it, well damn, but the night’s magic lives on in the memories of those who were there. As the final note faded into the warm Adelaide night, one thing was certain: Jeff Buckley’s spirit, like his music, remains timeless. Next up is Shaun with ‘Farnsey’ for the Adelaide Fringe. AND, I can’t wait.
