Review by Markus Hamence – Performance date: Saturday 15 March 2025, Gluttony, Adelaide, South Australia
If I could turn back time (Hey Cher!), it would be to the era of neon lights, teased hair (with lashings of hairspray), leg warmers, and absolute bangers, Forever 80s – BACK TO THE 80s! and it was my ticket to ride. Taking over The Flamingo at Gluttony, this high-energy tribute show brought the most iconic decade in music roaring back to life at the 2025 Adelaide Fringe. With a powerhouse setlist featuring hits from pop legends like Aha, Kenny Loggins, Tina Turner, and Bon Jovi, it is 100% more than another Fringe show – it was a full-blown party. And, trust me, I PARTIED.
Pure Nostalgia
The band hit the stage and we, the audience, was hooked instantly. Opening with Van Halen’s ‘Jump’, the crowd was already on their feet, clapping along and singing every word. Clearly that this wasn’t just a passive listening experience – the energy from the stage was contagious. The leads encouraged full participation, urging everyone to dance, wave their arms, and belt out their favourite 80s lyrics.
Laura Branigan’s ‘Gloria’ followed and there was NO GOING BACK, we were IN IT!
The performance was a seamless and merciless blend of live music, theatricality, and golden nostalgia. The band members didn’t just play the songs; they became the essence of the 80s, from the flashy outfits to the over-the-top dance moves. Every moment was infused with the fun, rebellious spirit that defined the decade.
Vocal Powerhouses & Standout Performances
A standout aspect of Forever 80s was its incredibly talented vocalists. The male lead, Blue Steel, rocking an Adam Ant-inspired look, delivered an electrifying rendition of ‘Take On Me’ that had the crowd roaring. Meanwhile, the female lead, Misfit, dressed in a Cyndi Lauper-style atire, took on Whitney Houston’s ‘I Wanna Dance with Somebody’, showcasing powerhouse vocals that would make the pop queen proud.
The chemistry between the performers was electric and just really dynamic, making it feel like they were having just as much fun as the audience. From playful interactions to full-band choreography, every moment was carefully crafted to immerse the crowd in the 80s experience.
To say they must have been exhausted after the show would be an understatement. If they literally had any energy left after the hour it would have purely been saved for crawling on all fours back to the dressing room.
‘Blue’ & ‘Misfit’ gave their all. In abundance. And with insane talent and showmanship. Credit.
The Ultimate 80s Playlist
The setlist was a greatest-hits parade, carefully curated to keep the energy high and the nostalgia flowing. Classic anthems like ‘Livin’ on a Prayer’, ‘Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)’, and ‘Footloose’ had the entire venue dancing like it was 1985. Even the deeper cuts – like Depeche Mode’s ‘Just Can’t Get Enough’ – were met with loud cheers from dedicated fans.
One of the most memorable moments was the band’s tribute to the movies. Their rendition of ‘I’ve Had The Time Of My Life’ had the entire crowd singing in unison, swaying their bodies, creating a truly magical atmosphere.
But, wait, did they really pop in ‘Wake Me Up Before You Go Go’ at On Your Markus’ request. Yup. They did. And they smashed it allllllll the way out of the park!
Lights, Costumes, and 80s Glam
Beyond the music, the production itself was a feast for the senses. The stage was drenched in colourful lights, with strobes flashing to the beat and bursts of smoke adding to the dramatic effect. The band members embraced full 80s fashion, from neon spandex and leather jackets to fingerless gloves and oversized sunglasses (tbh, I feel like they raided MY wardrobe).
The whole performance was a celebration of excess – the kind that made the 80s so unforgettable. Whether it was the wild keytar solos, the synchronised dance moves, or the cheeky banter between songs, Forever 80s nailed the era’s carefree, larger-than-life attitude.
A Party for All Generations
What made Forever 80s really freakin’ special was its ability to bring together fans of all ages. While some audience members were reliving their teenage years (yes, me), others were discovering these classic hits for the first time. The joy was universal – there’s something about 80s music that just makes people move.
By the time the final song played (a rousing encore of a couple of Bon Jovi bangers), there wasn’t a single person sitting down. The band left the stage to deafening applause, proving that even in 2025, the 80s are still alive and kicking. Thank you for the music 😉
Final Verdict: A Must-See for Any 80s Fan
Forever 80s – BACK TO THE 80s! wasn’t just another concert or Fringe show – it was a time machine, a dance party, and a love letter to one of the most iconic decades in music history. Whether you grew up in the 80s or just wished you had, this show was an absolute blast. If you ever get the chance to see them live, do yourself a favour – grab some glow sticks, throw on a leather jacket, and get ready to dance. They’ll be back I reckon. AND, very soon.
5/5 – A totally rad night of 80s magic!
