Review by Markus Hamence – Performance date: Saturday 15 March 2025, Star Theatres, Adelaide, South Australia
Bec Pynor’s ‘Someone Else’s Story’ has once again graced the Adelaide Fringe, delivering a captivating journey through Broadway’s finest tunes. Following a sold-out and award-winning debut in 2024, Pynor’s return to the Star Theatre Two has been met with enthusiastic acclaim. And very due, and very worthy.

A Personal and Musical Odyssey
In this intimate cabaret, Pynor intertwines personal anecdotes with a selection of 14 songs from renowned musicals such as ‘Mary Poppins’, ‘Wicked’ and ‘Hamilton’. The narrative traces her evolution from a young girl enchanted by musical theatre – nurtured by her grandparents’ shared passion – to her formative years performing as Jasmine in ‘Aladdin’, culminating in her rigorous music studies in Queensland. This structure offers audiences a heartfelt glimpse into the experiences that have shaped her artistic journey.
Bec holds her own on stage. Confident, with oodles of talent, Bec shines like a diamond as she tells her colourfully illustrated story through song and dialogue.
Stellar Vocal Performance
Pynor’s vocal prowess has been a highlight, with reviewers noting her ability to evoke a spectrum of emotions. Her performances are characterized by note-perfect clarity and a commanding stage presence. The inclusion of a duet with pianist Daniel Brunner adds a delightful dynamic to the show, showcasing versatility and depth in her musical interpretations.
Audience and Critical Reception
The show has resonated deeply with audiences, earning standing ovations (including the evening I attended) and heartfelt reactions. Attendees have praised Pynor’s extraordinary vocals and the emotional journey she crafts through her storytelling. One audience member remarked, “Bec’s vocals are extraordinary. It is impossible to hear her sing without experiencing a full range of emotions.”
‘Someone Else’s Story’ stands as a testament to Bec Pynor’s talent and passion, offering a memorable evening that celebrates both personal narrative and the timeless allure of Broadway. Bravo Bec!
Watch this space, the best is yet to come I feel.
