Sturt Avenue, the indie-folk band, unveils their latest single, ‘Passenger Side,’ a poignant reflection. This expressive track is inspired by a touching moment observed during a drive through the Mount Lofty Ranges, blending a heartfelt narrative with a tender folk sound.
Musically, ‘Passenger Side’ showcases a softer folk sound than Sturt Avenue’s typical style, while incorporating grander elements into the mix. The track draws inspiration from the softer folk rock influences of bands like the Mountain Goats and the Decemberists, creating a rich and immersive listening experience. With heartfelt and vivid lyrics of ‘Passenger Side’ being a standout feature.
Frontman Bryn Soden recounts the inspiration for the track: “This song was inspired by a drive I went on through the Mount Lofty ranges where we saw a middle-aged man and an old man that looked like he could be his father parked in a classic car watching the sunset. We drove back past about an hour later and they were still there, but it looked like the old man had passed on. It got me thinking that that would not be such a bad way to go, driving into the night with someone you love.”
The recording process for ‘Passenger Side’ was a collaborative and intimate effort. Bryn Soden recorded and mixed the track himself, with additional mix feedback and mastering by Kiah Gossner. The song features Bryce Lehmann on drums and Bryn’s father, John Soden, on mandolin, who also provided backing vocals alongside Dave Thompson. The remaining instrumentation was performed by Bryn, showcasing the band’s versatility and dedication to their craft. The recording took place in the band’s home studio in Hawthorndene, capturing the authenticity and raw emotion of the track.
‘Passenger Side’ aims to remind listeners to find joy in the small things and to appreciate the soft lights in the darkness that stave off the consuming void of the night. Sturt Avenue hopes that the song resonates with those who hear it, offering a sense of solace and connection.
