Cheersquad’s reissue of Snout’s ’94 debut What’s That Sound? is the indie-pop classic’s first time on vinyl
“Snout were masters of peculiar pop through the ’90s… Their shrewd handle on pop in all its forms meant that they could employ diverse influences into their sound – sometimes heavy, sometimes groovy, sometimes jangly – yet emerge sounding completely cohesive.” – Dan Condon, Double J/ABC.NET.AU

Reissued for the first time on vinyl, Cheersquad Records & Tapes‘ reissue of Snout’s debut 1994 album What’s That Sound? is out now.
Founded by talented singer/songwriter, Ross McLennan, Snout, formed in Melbourne in 1991 and disbanded in 2002. They released numerous recordings and were twice nominated for an ARIA Award. Their label affiliations included Half A Cow and most-prominently Au-go-go, and they were part of the same Melbourne scene that produced the likes of Even, Rail and McLennan‘s bother Link’s band the Meanies. They shared bills with all these bands, got loads of Triple J, community radio and street press love, performed on Recovery, featured heavily on Rage and played festivals such as The Big Day Out, Falls Festival,Livid and Meredith.
Melodically and sonically, Ross McLennan was and still is one of Australia’s unheralded pop geniuses. With Snout he loaded his songs with hooks, humour and a great fuzzy buzzy sound not too dissimilar to that of Redd Kross, who Snout supported on an early Australian tour.

We don’t know yet if Albo is/was a fan, but former Greens leader Adam Bandt professed in 2010: “I am a fan of jangle-pop bands like Bidston Moss, Underground Lovers, Ross McLennan and Snout.“
The reissue of What’s That Sound? follows Cheersquad‘s reissues of other Snout gems The New Pop Dialogue and Circle High and Wide in recent years. It is available on limited edition blue and red smash 12″ vinyl (100 only), black 12″ vinyl and digitally.
