Coming June 13 With New Collab “Weight On Me” Featuring Buddy Out now On Red Bull Records/Mind of a Genius
Launches Nationwide Giveaway to Help Five Lucky U.S. Fans Pay Their Rent
Coming off his debut performance at Coachella in April, rapper, producer, and singer-songwriter Peter $un (Sunny) has announced his next album Rent Was Due… will arrive on June 13 via Red Bull Records/Mind of a Genius. In tandem with the news, today he released his second single off the forthcoming project, “Weight On Me” featuring SoCal rapper Buddy.
In March, Sunny kicked things off with his bouncy single “All That I Want” featuring Bay Area rapper Rexx Life Raj. Keeping the vibes high, “Weight On Me” arrives just in time for summer, as Sunny and Buddy transport listeners to warmer months ahead. With breezy rhythms and a hook tailor-made for backyard functions and rooftop parties, it’s the perfect song for nights that turn into early mornings. The accompanying visualizer brings the moment to life, with the duo hosting a lively BBQ complete with friends, dancing, and of course, the soundtrack of the summer. Both singles are indicative of Sunny’s time on the West Coast – not only expanding his range as an artist but also cementing his place in the local music scene.
On the making of the single, Sunny shares, “Working with Buddy was cool; he brought good vibes to the studio and took the track’s energy to another level. He was so focused in our sessions and that allowed me to be really free in my approach. I just want people to have fun and get excited when this one comes on in the club.”
Buddy adds to the relatable moment that inspired the track, “This is a song that feels like the moment you build up the confidence to talk to the hot girl that almost got away.”
As a rising artist in Los Angeles, Sunny is no stranger to working odd jobs to make ends meet. In honor of the album title and its relatability, Sunny has launched “Scummy Sunny Management” – a faux property management company that provides real-life support in the form of a giveaway. Starting May 18th, U.S. residents can enter their email at rentwasdue.com for a chance to have a portion of one month’s rent paid by Sunny. Five winners will be selected, and the portal will close June 30th.
Further expanding on the album theme, Sunny has built a world of content around his music in the form of a vlog series. Shining a candid and comedic light on the real struggle to make rent in a city full of creatives, the first episode introduces Sunny’s predicament and his elaborate scheme to avoid eviction. Follow the series on his YouTube channel here.
Sunny recently joined Hunna G for his ‘take a seat, rap on the beat’ freestyle, flexing his quick whips where artists like Ghostface Killah and Larussell have sat before. It’s a brief taste of his versatility to come on Rent Was Due…

About Peter $un
Peter $un commits all of his emotions, thoughts, and truths to tape. He never holds back. The Richmond-born and Los Angeles-based rapper, vocalist, and producer confronts his trauma, discloses his ambitions, and embraces his potential over a soundtrack of future-facing hip-hop laced with eloquent jazz-style instrumentation, filled to the brim with undeniable soul.
As a kid, $un (also known as Sunny) fell in love with music. Sunny would scour his father’s R&B-centric record collection, finding local artists like Missy Elliott, Timbaland and The Neptunes instrumental to his soulful psychedelic appeal. His mother introduced him to essential neo-soul albums like Lauryn Hill’s 1998 solo breakthrough The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, and D’Angelo’s Voodoo, both of which shine through in his sound.
In high school, a friend recognized he could sing and encouraged him, so he picked up a mic. While on the come-up in his hometown, Sunny hustled his music on the underground scene and occasionally collaborated with friends on material that would be the springboard for his future projects. He soon gained traction with the 2016 mixtape, Paradise Is A Day Away. Joined by producer and longtime collaborator Blue Rondo, he later unveiled Don’t Forget To Smile in 2018. The project boasted “Love Drunk Lust (Make It Hard)” [feat. Trip Carter & KnottRudy], raking in 7 million Spotify streams and counting. 2021 saw him release Scumbaby, including fan favorites “Work” and “Sometimes.” Inciting widespread tastemaker applause, OkayPlayer hailed it as “an introspective exploration of rap fused with jazz and soul,” and KAZI crowned him “a creative music force.”
After generating tens of millions of streams and earning acclaim from Ones To Watch, Lyrical Lemonade, DJ Booth, and more, he got vulnerable on his 2022 EP, Phone Calls Gimme Anxiety. The project showed a different side of Sunny as the songs reflected his grieving process from real life experiences. “I think that’s the beauty in going through something–keeping a positive mindset and still being able to have fun and enjoy the moment,” he says. Flipping the script in 2023, he delivered the upbeat EP, 3PIECEalongside his mini documentary $unny Daze, from Red Bull Media House and Ghetto Film School. Next up, Sunny keeps the vibes high with new music on the horizon, starting with the laid-back single, “All That I Want” featuring Rexx Life Raj.
