Eagerly anticipated new album So Much For Second Chances available for pre-order now
Sydney “offensively average” alt-punk underdogs SoSo have today released ‘Candy Mouth’ – the third single from their highly anticipated, boldly self-projected #1 record So Much For Second Chances. Taking tongue-in-cheek aim at gatekeepers and the challenge of navigating music industry dynamics, the pop-infused alt rock track is laced with double entendre and a chorus that doesn’t quit.
Backed by a fiercely loyal fan base, and with millions of streams and multiple sold out tours to their name, SoSo have been making waves on their own terms. Working with acclaimed producer Stevie Knight (Yours Truly / Stand Atlantic / Between You & Me), So Much For Second Chances sees the band evolve their songwriting and sound, embracing melodic pop vocal hooks and incorporating samples, synths and heavier production. At its core though, the record is still true to SoSo – ambitious, playful, and unmistakably their own.
Of ‘Candy Mouth’, frontman Rhys de Burgh says it’s the kind of track the band has been wanting to write for a while – something that sonically blurs the lines between alt, pop and rock. “‘Candy Mouth’ was actually the last song we wrote before heading into the studio, and so it was a case of getting in there and working with Stevie to really make sure it slapped.”
“Lyrically, it’s about that kinda ‘unknown’ of the music industry – trying to convince yourself that you’re doing something worthwhile that resonates with fans, all the while being overlooked by the industry. Watching a tonne of other acts get leg ups thanks to ‘knowing the right person’ can be a real kick in the teeth, having ‘friends’ in the scene suddenly drop all contact once you’re no longer useful and all that typical music industry stuff. So in the end, ‘Candy Mouth’ came to be this song kinda calling out and having a laugh at those people who’ve used their ‘Candy Mouth’ to climb the ladder of success, whilst dealing with some of the fun and frustration of trying to ‘make it’ whilst being overlooked.”
The new single is the band’s third release lifted from their forthcoming album So Much For Second Chances, due for release later this year. ‘Oxytocin’ and ‘Messed Up’ are out now.
