Adelaide and South Australia's premier Arts & Entertainment coverage

Red Phoenix Theatre Presents Adelaide’s Premiere of Martin McDonagh’s Darkly Hilarious Play, Hangmen.

Red Phoenix Theatre is thrilled to announce the Adelaide premiere of Martin McDonagh’s critically acclaimed play, Hangmen. From October 24th to November 2nd, audiences will be taken on a rollercoaster of laughter, suspense, and unexpected twists at the iconic Holden Street Theatres.

Known for his razor-sharp wit, McDonagh (In BrugesThe Banshees of Inisherin) brings his signature dark humour to Hangmen, a play bursting with biting dialogue and wickedly funny moments.

Set in a 1960s British pub, the story revolves around Harry Wade, a former hangman with plenty to say, now that hanging has been abolished. What else is a man of his ‘particular’ talents to do? As the tension mounts and a mysterious stranger enters the scene, the comedy turns sharper, the stakes higher, and the laughs louder.

This production promises to be a standout. Hangmen is celebrated not only for its bold humour but for the way it brilliantly balances comedy with moments of chilling suspense. Red Phoenix Theatre, Adelaide’s only theatre company exclusively performing South Australian premieres, is proud to bring this Olivier Award-winning play to local audiences for the first time.

“We are beyond excited to stage Hangmen,” says director Nick Fagan. “It’s one of those plays that hooks you from the very first scene. The characters are outrageous, the humour is pitch black, and the twists will leave the audience gasping—and laughing.”

Don’t miss your chance to experience McDonagh’s genius in a performance that guarantees both belly laughs and edge-of-your-seat tension. Hangmen is not just a comedy, it’s a theatrical experience full of unforgettable moments that will leave Adelaide buzzing.
