Most Memorable Adelaide Experience: Growing up in the Adelaide Hills surrounded by nature, space and music being a constant in my life.
Jeff Smith is a public relations and communications professional based in Adelaide, South Australia with over 20 years-experience.

Can you share a bit about your background and what brought you to Adelaide?
A decision by my parents brought me to Adelaide from Scotland. My passion for entertainment and music shaped my future in public relations. My love for all things entertainment saw me surrounded by live music since a young age. I began my career working alongside legendary South Australian publicist Neil Ward, before working with brands such as the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra and WOMADelaide.
Today I am a freelance communications and public relations specialist working nationally across a range of sectors including the arts, lifestyle, social services and hospitality.
What are your interests outside of reviewing arts and entertainment?
I am a passionate writer who appreciates the art of words and creativity. Outside of my professional work, I write daily capturing life. I also enjoy nature which I build into my everyday life with a mix of exercise, nature and amateur photography.
I am also interested in philosophy and human psychology and what drives the future of the world.
What’s your favourite thing about living in Adelaide?
The beauty of nature, whether it’s the Adelaide Hills or our incredible coastlines I am so fortunate to live on one of the best places on the planet.
I also love the accessibility to the arts and entertainment scene. There is a big world to uncover in Adelaide, you just need to open your eyes and mind.
Do you have a personal mantra or philosophy that guides your work?
I personal mantra is to appreciate the moment in work and trust the process. Aim for the smallest progress daily and be grateful for that.
Who or what inspires you most in life?
The power of nature and creativity are my biggest sources of inspiration.
Personally, my wife Sarah and parents also inspire me as my life companions and people that I draw so much inspiration and strength from.
What’s your ideal way to spend a weekend in Adelaide?
A morning on the Fleurieu Peninsula exploring the coast and appreciating the local haunts followed by an afternoon in the Adelaide Hills in Stirling, a place that I will always regard as home.
If you could only recommend one place to visit in Adelaide, what would it be?
Aldinga Beach, a place that is always evolving and filled with life.
What advice would you give to someone looking to explore arts and entertainment in Adelaide?
Just do it, don’t have any expectations and go with the flow. Be open to new experiences and have fun with the process.
What inspired your passion for arts and entertainment in Adelaide?
Childhood and my parents who encouraged a love for music in our household.
What’s your favourite event or venue in Adelaide?
Her Majesty’s Theatre, one of the most beautiful theatres in Australia.
How do you approach reviewing local arts and entertainment?
I take the experience in and capture the moment in a genuine way that reflects the experience, vibe and audience.
What’s been your most memorable arts experience in Adelaide so far?
The power of live classical music in some of our most iconic venues such as Adelaide Town Hall, Her Majesty’s Theatre and Festival Theatre. The sound is all-consuming and mesmerising.
How do you stay connected with the local creative community?
I support the best I can through advocating through my work and physically showing my presence at events wherever possible. I also stay connected through conversations and mentorship.
If you could interview any artist or performer, who would it be and why?
I would love to interview producer Rick Rubin around his research on creativity and Paul McCartney on the art of song writing and longevity.
What’s your go-to spot in Adelaide for creative inspiration or relaxation?
The South Australian coastline.
How do you see the arts and entertainment scene evolving in Adelaide over the next few years?
I believe the scene is thriving not only locally, but on a national and international level. South Australia is more on the map globally and that the next few years will present more massive opportunities.
