**It’s a King Thing: Celebrating the Rise of Drag Kings and Things**

A night of performance, community and gender-expansive self-expression comes to Adelaide this Feast Festival.

The spotlight is on Drag Kings and Things at It's a King Thing, a bold celebration of a growing but historically underrepresented corner of the drag world.

Part showcase, part open stage and part dance party, It's a King Thing is a love letter to underground communities of Drag Kings and Things. The event creates space for performers and audiences alike to explore masculinity, gender expression and drag in all its forms.

Drag Kings have long been part of queer performance culture. Many trace the modern king movement to the 1990s and early 2000s, when thriving butch, lesbian and gender-diverse communities created dedicated spaces for performers to explore masculinity, identity and self-expression. However, with the global closing and shortage of Lesbian bars and the explosion of drag queens in mainstream television, kings have been written out of the drag scene.

However, Drag Kings and gender-expansive drag artists are experiencing a resurgence, with growing recognition on the world stage, reality TV show program King of Drag, Season 2, recently airing and an exploding and expanding community in Naarm. Through It’s a King Thing producers Pip Stachio, Bruno Salsicce and Scott Balls aim to spread some of the magic of the Naarm scene in Adelaide while uplifting the community already in the city. The show includes local and once-local established, awarded and celebrated drag kings and things Dorian Courtisan, Loveit Murray and Dragon Yutahell in amongst open stage spots. 17 local aspiring and emerging performers have been selected to participate in a pay-what-you-can workshop prior to the event and then invited to step into the spotlight themselves. The festivities will continue into the evening with a dance party led by DJ Scott Balls, bringing together drag bros, siblings, friends and newcomers on the dance floor.

Salsicce was awarded this year's MEDEA’s Melbourne’s Best Drag King, B asalls is known a prolific tech and runner up in the Thursgay’s Pride Pageant and Stachio is the 2025 winner of The Apprentease Victoria, founder of Boiber Shop and prominent producer and drag king from Naarm.

Whether you're a seasoned performer, drag-curious, or simply looking for an unforgettable night out, It's a King Thing welcomes everyone to don a moustache, embrace their inner king or gender ambiguous thing and celebrate the underground world of drag.
