Ron Sexsmith

Markus Hamence is in The Jungle Room with Ron Sexsmith ahead of his 2026 Autsralian / NZ Tour Hangover Terrace Tour

“A gentle, sure-handed tunesmith with an innate feel for the shape of a pop song, Ron Sexsmith balances melancholy with hope, like a bruised soul summoning strength for one more attempt at happiness.” – Rolling Stone

“Sexsmith is a (Canadian) songwriter with a gift for an instantly seductive pop/folk/rock melody, a facile way with a lyrical narrative and the ability to produce really charming and sometimes deeply poignant turns-of-phrase” The Cinch Review

“When Sexsmith sings, he rarely places a note squarely on the beat. He eases into it a little ahead of time, or hesitates and lets it drift in late like a wallflower trying to slip into a party unnoticed” – John Pareles, The New York Times

Known for his insightful lyrics and distinctive voice, Sexsmith has collaborated with the likes of Daniel Lanois, Mitchell Froom, Ane Brun, Tchad Blake, and Bob Rock. His songwriting appears on albums from Rod Stewart, k.d. Lang, Nick Lowe, Emmylou Harris, Fiest and Michael Bublé. He has built a steadfast reputation with critics and some of his songwriting heroes ( Paul McCartney, Elton John, Ray Davies, John Prine, Gordon Lightfoot, Leonard Cohen, Elvis Costello, Chris Martin to name just a few) for his characteristically honest, sensitive and enduring approach to the songwriter craft which over the years has evolved into a unique and timeless blend of classic pop, contemporary folk and roots-rock idioms.

“With a songwriting style that’s modest and often brilliant, Sexsmith creates music that’s delicately crafted, suffused with a kind of melancholic grace.”  – The Guardian

Cooking Vinyl released Sexsmith’s new album “Hangover Terrace,” August 29, 2025. The album title is a play on Hanover Terrace, the name of which tickled the fancy of Sexsmith’s drummer Don Kerr. He labelled it “Hangover Terrace”- “a lightbulb moment” for Sexsmith who snagged it for the title. The record produced by Martin Terefe includes 14 songs, marks a departure from his recent work.

“My last few albums actually had a feeling of rural contentment, “Hangover Terrace” feels more wounded to me,” says Sexsmith… “There’s some self-examination going on and a desire to know who my real friends are. It also deals with the passing of time and how many more things become dear.”

Filmmaker Rod Arrowsmith made an acclaimed documentary in 2010 called ‘Love Shines’. In 2017 Ron published his first book – a fairy tale entitled ‘Deer Life’.

It has been eleven years since Ron’s last visit to Australia, his fans will be delighted to enjoy the wonder of this sublime artist.
