A Vibrant New Production Of Mozart’s Magic Flute Hits Adelaide Next Month

Mozart’s The Magic Flute takes centre stage at Her Majesty’s Theatre next month in a vibrant new production presented by State Opera South Australia. This highly anticipated Australian premiere elevates Mozart’s magnificent score to new heights, blending soaring music with rich mythology, ancient symbolism and the electrifying energy of downtown Hong Kong.

Young Tamino embarks on a perilous quest through an enchanted realm where nothing is as it seems. Armed with a magical flute and guided by fast-food delivery guy Papageno, he must navigate a world of wicked queens, mystical trials, and ancient wisdom to rescue his beloved Pamina and discover his true destiny.

State Opera Artistic Director Dane Lam said the original fantastical world has been reimagined in this new production making it perfect for first-timers and seasoned opera lovers alike.

“This opera is joyful, profound and deeply human — it asks what we’re willing to go through in the name of love, truth and wisdom – themes that are still relevant in today’s world and will resonate with all ages. Bringing this production to life in Adelaide is a celebration of everything opera can be — emotional, bold, cross-cultural and completely alive and I’m sure the people of Adelaide will love it,” he said.

From trials of fire and water to enchanted rituals and mysterious initiations, The Magic Flute draws audiences into a world where love must overcome fear, and where enlightenment is earned through courage and compassion. With unforgettable characters, dazzling transformations and moments of real humour, the opera delivers both spectacle and soul — proving why it has captivated audiences for more than two centuries.

“The Magic Flute story transcends time. We’ve placed this story in a world inspired by the rhythm and movement of a busy Asian metropolis—the energy of a subway, the magic of crossing between the ordinary and the extraordinary,” said Lam. “Opera lets us see the world differently. It reminds us that something mundane can suddenly feel mythical—and that’s what audiences respond to, no
matter the century,” Lam said.

The cast features a stellar lineup, including internationally acclaimed Australian baritone David Greco as Papageno and soprano Sofia Troncoso as Pamina. They are joined by Helena Dix, and Danielle Bavli who will deliver one of opera’s most difficult arias as Queen of the Night, and a strong contingent of local performers, including Teddy Tahu Rhodes -bringing vocal brilliance and local connection to
the stage.

The production is directed by acclaimed Chinese film, theatre, and opera artist Shuang Zou, whose creative vision merges Eastern and Western traditions through striking theatrical storytelling. Zou is widely recognised for her cross-cultural practice and leadership at the Beijing Music Festival, where she has shaped major international collaborations. Set and costume design is by award-winning
Australian designer Dan Potra, whose credits span the Sydney Olympic ceremonies and major opera houses around the world.

The Magic Flute epitomises State Opera’s Opera Without Borders vision — connecting South Australia to international voices, stories, and stages. This world-first collaboration between State Opera South Australia, Opera Hong Kong, and the Beijing Music Festival debuted in Hong Kong earlier this year and will travel to Beijing in 2026, supported by the National Foundation for Australia-China Relations.

Andrea Michaels MP, Minister for Arts said: “This international collaboration speaks to the kind of bold, outward-looking work that defines South Australia’s cultural ambition, and Dane Lam, Mark Taylor and the team at State Opera South Australia are to be commended for this world-first partnership. The Magic Flute is a shining example of how Adelaide can lead in artistic innovation, cultural diplomacy and global performance.”

Don’t miss this once-in-a-generation operatic event. The Magic Flute plays at Her Majesty’s Theatre from 28 August – 6 September
