Review by Markus Hamence – Performance date: Thursday 21 November 2024, Shedley Theatre, Elizabeth, SA
‘Benny and the Jets: The Story of Elton John’, starring Ben Francis, is a captivating and thoroughly entertaining tribute that brings the legendary musician’s life and music to the stage. This production not only showcases Elton John’s iconic songs but also delves into the personal journey that shaped his illustrious and glittering career.
Ben Francis is no stranger to us. Ben is the director and of of the four performers in the now legendary The60Four which have gone to to receive massive acclaim around Australia. Taking off the ’60Four’ hat very briefly, Ben now leads this performance with remarkable energy and charisma, capturing the essence of Elton John’s flamboyant style and musical prowess. Backed by a dynamic and well selected five-piece band and three talented dancers (who take on various characters during the story-telling), the show delivers a rich and immersive experience. Audiences are treated to fresh and respectful renditions of classics like ‘Rocket Man’, ‘Your Song’, ‘Crocodile Rock’ and ‘I’m Still Standing’, each performed with a vibrant and rewarding approach.
Ben’s insane and broad vocal range and his showmanship comes to life and ALL eyes are on him during this show. I’ve said this for a while now… but this guy has big stardom in his future. He has immense and enviable talent. Not only as a performer, a vocalist, a piano player BUT also as a director, musical director and producer AND appears well equipped to wear an acting badge too. PHEW!. Francis, to wrap up, nails the nuances and tones of a young then middle-aged Elton. Bravo to this man.
Beyond the music, the production offers insightful storytelling, exploring the trials and triumphs of Elton John’s life. This narrative depth adds a layer of authenticity, allowing the audience to connect more intimately with the artist’s journey. You’s have to had been living under a rock to not know the Elton story, but, this show delivers in such a way it’s almost like hearing Elton’s life for the first time.
The show’s attention to detail is evident in its vibrant costumes and stage design, reflecting the glitz and glamour associated with Elton John’s performances. The choreography is both lively and precise, complementing the musical arrangements and enhancing the overall spectacle. The audio is clear and punching. The lighting is exceptional as is the screen visuals.
‘Benny and the Jets: The Story of Elton John’ is a well crafted show and it’s a theatrical experience that celebrates the legacy of one of music’s most enduring icons. A longtime fan?, or new to Elton John’s music?, this production offers an entertaining and heartfelt homage that grabs the audience of all ages with joy and celebration.
