First Look At Lucia Di Lammermoor

With the opening performance of State Opera of South Australia’s Lucia di Lammermoor only days away, we’ve been enjoying the process of reviving John Copley’s iconic production, breathing new life into it and looking at Lucia’s story with new eyes and fresh angles.

You’d be mad to miss it!

Here are FIVE REASONS to indulge in Lucia di Lammermoor:

1. IT’S A ONCE-IN-A-GENERATION OPPORTUNITY

It’s been over 30 years since Lucia di Lammermoor was presented in Adelaide. Donizetti’s masterpiece is a production of epic scale, notoriously one of the most challenging of the opera repertoire due to its vocal fireworks, heart-wrenching duets and thundering choral ensembles. Adelaide, you are in for a treat.

2. THE LOVE STORY

Lucia and Edgardo’s story gives major Romeo and Juliet vibes: their families are at war, their love blooms in secret, there’s deceit and betrayal, intrigue and jealousy, madness and murder. And while it’s set in 18th Century Scotland, the big emotions it unlocks are very much contemporary – and relevant. Isn’t that what opera is all about?

3. THE GRAND SET AND COSTUMES

The grandeur of the set cannot be understated: the design fills every inch of the stage in Her Majesty’s theatre and draws you into the story. The well-travelled costumes, each a wonderful time capsule of operatic history, have been revived and modernised by our wonderful Head of Wardrobe, Tracey Richardson, who worked tirelessly with the team to add colour and texture with panels, cuffs and collars, while staying faithful to the original design.

3. FINAL SEATS RELEASED

Final seats in the stalls and dress circle have now been released, with tickets starting from $79. Get your gang together: if you book a group of 6 seats, you can save up to $120! And if you are under 30 years old, don’t miss the chance to experience grand opera for only $35.

5. KEEP AN EYE OUT FOR A SPECIAL GUEST ON OPENING NIGHT

In an exclusive opening night cameo, ABC Adelaide’s Breakfast host Jules Schiller will enjoy this production from the best seat in the house… the stage! Keep your eyes peeled to spot him among the chorus, attending (crashing?) the wedding between Lucia and Arturo. It won’t be a fairytale event, but certainly one to remember…
